The Intentional Father - Father’s Day
The Intentional Father series, shared on Father’s Day, invites fathers and father figures to embrace a purposeful, faith-centered approach to parenting. Inspired by Jon Tyson’s book The Intentional Father, this message categorizes five types of fathers, challenging dads to aspire to become “intentional fathers”—men who actively shape their children’s faith and character. Through intentional fatherhood, a dad seeks to understand his children deeply, helping them to live lives of purpose in alignment with God.
The Types of Fathers
This message begins by exploring the five types of fathers identified by Tyson: the irresponsible, ignorant, inconsistent, involved, and intentional fathers. The series highlights that while being involved is beneficial, intentional fatherhood goes beyond presence, requiring a deep, purposeful investment in children’s spiritual, emotional, and personal growth. Fathers are encouraged to actively understand their children, helping them to grow into who God has created them to be.
Lessons from the Prodigal Son: Running to Your Child, Your Brother, and Your Father
Using the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32), the message illustrates three key actions of intentional fatherhood:
- Run to Your Child: Fathers are called to seek out their children with unconditional love, especially during times of failure, modeling the same grace and forgiveness shown by the father in the parable.
- Run to Your Brother: This point challenges fathers to extend compassion and seek unity in difficult family dynamics, as exemplified by the older brother’s need to reconnect in the parable.
- Run to Your Father: Fathers are encouraged to continually return to God for guidance, strength, and wisdom, recognizing that each of us plays the role of the prodigal at times.
Key Goals:
Encourage men to become spiritual leaders in their homes, drawing from God’s love and grace to make a lasting impact on their children and families.
